Military and Naval History

You can’t talk about Brompton without the forces so this section is for anyone who has items relating to them. We’re starting with the help of local militaria collectors who have things owned by people who served here.

Full Dress of a Lieutenant Colonel of Royal Engineers c. 1930s

This uniform is almost unchanged from the 1850s when it was introduced. The headgear altered to a helmet in the 1880s and the busby was reintroduced between the world wars. The uniform of the Royal Signals was based on this with a difference in the belts and the colour of the collar and cuffs. We don’t know whose this was, but the owner tells me that he got the jacket during a big sale just before the RE museum moved to its new site. (They wouldn’t do that now of course!)

Thomas Greet was the first Captain of Chatham Dockyard after a career of thirty six years. Here he is as a captain

He became a Rear Admiral just before retiring. Here is his full dress uniform (above left) at the Captains House at Chatham Dockyard. The Captain of the Dockyard’s House was built c 1895 and is a Scheduled Ancient Monument & Grade II listed building. It was built as the residence of the Admiral Superintendent’s staff captain. In 1905 the post was renamed Captain of the Dockyard and assumed the additional responsibility of Deputy Superintendent of the yard

Rear Admiral Thomas Greet died in 1947 in Richmond
